Brown Voices: South Asian American Experiences in Schools is based on years of doctoral research into what South Asian American students experience, and what adults keep getting wrong.

Drawing on a national survey of 85 South Asian American adults, in-depth interviews, and original research conducted at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Punita Rice examines what South Asian American students actually experience in U.S. schools — and what teachers, families, and institutions often miss because of assumptions tied to the model minority myth. It’s written for teachers who want to understand the South Asian American students in their classrooms, for parents trying to make sense of what their kids are experiencing, and for South Asian American adults who recognize their own school years in these pages. It’s written for you.

The Brown Voices Podcast (also previously called the Brown Voices Be Inspired project), first started in 2017. It was grounded in the simple idea that representation matters. The series, which consisted of interviews in a written format, launched as part of the Improving South Asian American Experiences (ISAASE) program, an outreach program I started to partner with local schools and bring them free research and resources for teachers to learn more about South Asian American students and their needs. In 2026, I brought this project back to life in as a new video interview series, and that's how it exists today. Welcome to the Brown Voices Podcast, a conversation series that is part of the Brown Voices Project.
