Brown Voices: South Asian American Experiences in Schools is based on years of doctoral research into what South Asian American students experience, and what adults keep getting wrong.

Drawing on a national survey of 85 South Asian American adults, in-depth interviews, and original research conducted at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Punita Rice examines what South Asian American students actually experience in U.S. schools — and what teachers, families, and institutions often miss because of assumptions tied to the model minority myth. It’s written for teachers who want to understand the South Asian American students in their classrooms, for parents trying to make sense of what their kids are experiencing, and for South Asian American adults who recognize their own school years in these pages. It’s written for you.

What is Brown Voices?

Brown Voices: South Asian American Experiences in Schools shines a light on the experiences of South Asian American kids, and especially on how teacher cultural proficiency—especially belief in the model minority myth—shapes the support Brown students get (...or don't get), across achievement levels.

What does it actually feel like to be South Asian American in an American classroom?

Brown Voices
draws on research, conversations, qualitative and quantitative studies, and more to answer that.

Dr. Punita Rice shines a light on the experiences of South Asian American kids’ experiences, and especially on how teacher cultural proficiency—especially belief in the model minority myth—shapes the support Brown students get (...or don't get), across achievement levels.

“…has brought crucial attention to the complex realities of being a Brown student in American schools.”

What's changed in the new edition?

Brown Voices was originally published in 2018 by Bloomsbury Publishing (formerly Rowman & Littlefield) under the title South Asian American Experiences in Schools: Brown Voices from the Classroom. After five years of advocacy, the rights were reverted to the author, and this revised edition is being published under Dr. Rice's own imprint.

The book has been substantially revised and restructured. Methodology now lives in footnotes and appendices rather than the body of the text, making it accessible to a broader audience without sacrificing scholarly rigor.

The new edition also weaves in conversations from the Be Inspired interview series, including voices like Vishal Vaidya, Himanshu Suri (Heems) Jyoti Chand (Mamajotes), Sujata Day, Kevin Negandhi, Pavana Reddy, and more.

What hasn't changed: the research. All studies were conducted under Johns Hopkins University's Institutional Review Board with academic advisor supervision, and core findings have been published in the peer-reviewed Berkeley Review of Education.
Brown Voices: South Asian American Experiences in Schools is rereleasing fall 2026
